Cultural data is not open and free to use usually. What if it would be? What would you do with it? We were learning in Hackathon 5.–7.2.2016 in Helsinki how to make cultural heritage to be vivid with the help of coders and artists.
Nowadays it’s easy to use images and other content if it’s free or not. Usually illegal copies are taken with smart phone having poor quality. Sharing original high-quality version makes it all to look better and attractive, and makes is possible to do high-quality projects also. You can also be influential to get correct meta data with the art work.
3D-printed statistics and FabLab
During the intensive weekend was presented all together 20 projects, which made use of open interfaces and cultural heritage. We saw example game using museum collections, audio mixed with open maps and cultural sites and new way to use Periscope with cultural heritage videos.
Statistics are everything else than lovable – usually. Aalto University has FabLab – media laboratory where was born a unique mix of statistics, vinyl laser cut and experimental spirit. The result was transparent and fun way to see the numbers and data.
FabLab is one project itself and could come from the word fabulous, but for real it means: an open-access digital fabrication laboratory. In Finland exist two of them, one in Aalto University in Helsinki and one in Oulu, North Finland.
These kind of events are possible just when you’ll get right kind of talents together. Every project needs application development, visualization, story telling, game development and open-minded makers.
Hackathon made it possible to test and try ideas that would not be possible in normal circumstances. It was important to give a try also for the bad ideas to get more and better ones later.
